B-roll is what gives an edit pace, detail and atmosphere, but it’s often the part people rush or film as an afterthought. This private one-day workshop is designed to help you shoot more useful, considered footage that supports the story and makes your final edit feel stronger.
Working with a DSLR or mirrorless camera, you’ll learn how to spot good visual moments, film details, create movement, capture cutaways and build short sequences that edit together properly. The day is practical from start to finish, so you’ll spend plenty of time filming, reviewing what you’ve shot and learning how to improve it.

Learn how to find B-roll opportunities in any location, from details and textures to actions, movement and establishing shots. You’ll learn what to look for before filming, so your footage supports the story instead of becoming a random montage of nice-looking clips.

Learn how to make your B-roll more cinematic using framing, lens choice, camera angles and controlled movement. We’ll cover simple techniques for handheld shooting, sliders, gimbals or tripods, depending on your kit and the style of footage you want to create.
Learn to think like an editor while you film, so you capture the shots you actually need when you get back to the timeline. We’ll review your footage, look at what works, spot what’s missing and start shaping it into a stronger final sequence.
